When to Book Graduation Photos
Graduation isn’t just for spring! Every year, thousands of students across Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia cross the stage in the fall. 🍂 Whether you’re finishing your degree at George Mason, UMD, Georgetown, or another local school, your fall graduation deserves to be celebrated with photos that capture this milestone.
So, when’s the best time to book your fall graduation session in the DMV? Here are my top tips.
1. Book 2–3 Months Before Your Ceremony
Fall is one of the most popular photo seasons — not just for graduates, but also for families, engagements, and weddings. To make sure you get the best date and location, I recommend reaching out at least 2–3 months in advance (August–September for December graduates).
2. Take Advantage of Fall Foliage
October and early November bring the richest colors of the season — golden yellows, warm reds, and fiery oranges. These tones look stunning with caps and gowns and make your portraits stand out. Late November is still beautiful, but trees start to thin, so earlier is better if you want that full fall look.
3. Plan Around Daylight Savings
With the time change in early November, the sun sets much earlier. That means the golden hour (the dreamiest light for photos) often happens around 4:30 PM. Afternoon sessions can feel earlier than you expect, so booking weekday slots or planning ahead helps avoid conflicts.
4. Group Sessions Fill Quickly
If you want to celebrate with friends and split the cost, book as soon as possible. Coordinating multiple graduates’ schedules is much easier when everyone plans ahead — plus, group photos in fall leaves are always a hit.
